The eldest of 10 children of the late Percha Francis and Linnie Flinn Mays Jarrell, Helen was born in Comfort, W.Va., on February 10, 1908. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by Chester Eddy, her husband of 46 years; daughter, Phyllis McKinney; granddaughter, Constance McKinney Childress; great-grandson, Don Woodward; and siblings, Fay Jarrell, Martha Foster, Mirian Payton, Dr. Carl Jarrell, Dr. Cecil Jarrell, Hon. Donald Jarrell, John Jarrell and Woodrow Jarrell. She is survived by her sister, Mary Jo (Dr. William) Kirkley of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; daughter, Marilyn Wilson of Zanesville, Ohio; grandchildren, Maria McKinney and Chris (Bill) Safley of Aiken, S.C., Karl Wilson of Dresden, Ohio, and Veronica Wilson and Stephen (Kelly) Wilson of Zanesville, Ohio; grandson-in-law, Jim Wayne Childress of Grundy, Va.; great-grandchildren, Kim Woodward of Aiken, S.C., Red (Stacy) Childress of Warren, Pa., and Douglas and Bradley Wilson of Zanesville, Ohio; great-great-grandchildren, Tristan Woodward and Taylor and Riley Childress; cousin, Veatrice Banks; numerous nieces and nephews; devoted friends, Andrew and Eileen Shepherd, and faithful caregiver Lynn Seward and the staff of Appletree Home of Dresden, Ohio. A member of Vienna Baptist Church, she had also attended Healing Stream Baptist Church in Seth, Briscoe Run Baptist Church in Vienna, Dawes and Handley Methodist churches in West Virginia, Euclid Avenue Methodist and First Christian churches in Zanesville, Ohio. During her 33 years as an elementary teacher in Boone and Kanawha counties of West Virginia, she influenced the lives of many young people, always striving to help her students develop the self-esteem, acquire the skills and attain the work ethic required to achieve their goals. Her poetry, quilts, embroidery, knitting, crochet, flower gardens, china collection, classroom bulletin boards, Valentine's Day boxes and art projects reflected her creativity and appreciation of beauty. Friends and family are invited to celebrate her life at Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home in Charleston, W.Va., during visitation from 6 to 8 on Friday, May 2, 2008, and homegoing service at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Interment will occur in Evergreen Cemetery in Parkersburg, W.Va., following services. Donations may be made to the scholarship fund created in her granddaughter's honor: Connie E.
