Former four-term St. Albans Mayor Averil L. Ramsey, 88, died Wednesday in Sunbridge of Dunbar
after a long illness.
Ramsey "took public life and raised it up a whole notch," said Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va.,
during a ceremony marking Ramsey's retirement as mayor.
Ramsey, a retired employee of Union Carbide's South Charleston plant, served as a city
councilman in St. Albans for 12 years, starting in 1947.
As chairman of the city's Parks and Recreation Committee, he supervised the purchase and
development of St. Albans City Park.
After serving three terms as mayor during the 1950s and '60s, he was elected to another in
1981. He retired in 1985.
Ramsey was a member of First Baptist Church in St. Albans, where he served as a deacon and
choir member. He was also a member of the Junior Order of Mechanics.
Surviving: wife, Mabel A.; stepson, Glenn Hawley of League City, Texas; two stepgrandchildren;
two stepgreat-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, St. Albans, with the Rev. Joel
Harpold officiating. Entombment will be in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Friends may
call from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to First Baptist Church, 523 Second St., St.
Albans, WV 25177.
