"John Bradford Alderman
John grew up in Newport [NE]and graduated from Newport High School in May
1933. In 1934 he and his folks moved to Bassett, Nebraska . He worked for a
time in Patitz Store, Bassett Post Office, and the Commercial Bank. In
1936 he went to work for his uncle, Harry Galleher in Galleher Lumber
Yard.
John married Voy Carr in 1937. They lived in Plainview, O'Neil and
North Platte for a short time, but most of the years in Bassett, Nebraska.
John was in the Army two years from 1943-1945 and spent one and a half
years in the Signal Corp. in Naples, Italy.
John has been mayor of Bassett, served on the city council, president
of Lions Club, president of fair board, president of school board and
worked as a bookkeeper and manager part of the time for Galleher Lumber
Company for 40 years. He retired December 1985. [Rock County Centennial;

"A tribute to our Father by [names omitted] his children:
Dad was a gem. He was always giving, never taking; forever an
optimist and he always let us know that we were all equally special. He
was very proud of each of his kids and grandkids. He loved his wife the
way it talks about in Ephesians 5:25 of husbands love your wife the way
that Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. We learned
through our father's example the value of hard work, perseverance, and
honesty. His sense of humor and smile were always a delight. He was not
a rich man by worldly standards, but was a very contented man, and I
believe his contentment was because of the wealth of friends and family
that he had throughout his lifetime. It was easy to look up to him and
respect him for who he was because of the way he lived his life.
And now that he has parted from this life, his tenderhearted spirit
stays with each of us who knew him best. He always had stories to tell
us about growing up in Newport and about his German Shepherd dog Duke.
He would tell us that he graduated fourth in his class at Newport High
School, and then would say of course they only graduated four that year
in 1933. Dad didn't like to get too far from home and would relate to us
how homesick he would get even working in the hayfield a few miles south
of Newport when he was growing up. This was really put to the test later
in life when he told us the story leaving Newport News, Virginia to serve
his country in WWII. He talked about the shoreline getting smaller and
smaller and not knowing whether he would ever see this country again or
his wife and two kids that he was leaving behind.
Dad had lots of basketball stories. One of the favorites was going
to Wood Lake to play, but John Bradford Alderman, Sr.
Newport's coach was sick and he sent those boys to Wood Lake and told
them to be good and not run the score up. Dad said they scored over one
hundred points, but they were nice they even made one basket for Wood
Lake.
Dad loved to talk and argue politics. He was an ordinary average
guy with an extraordinary personality, and if your were lucky enough to
know him then you would be the better person. He was a friend to many
young, old, and in between, and if we had a choice to live our life over
again we would pick him for our dad. We love you dad."
Obituary of John Bradford Alderman Sr.:
John Bradford Alderman, Sr. was born in Newport, Nebraska on October
4, 1915, to James Madison and Grace Barr Alderman. He was the youngest
of seven children. He passed away January 12, 2000 at Rock County Long
Term Care Center after a long heartbreaking struggle with Alzheimer's at
the age of 84 years, 3 months and 8 days.
John lived in Rock county most of his 84 years. He graduated from
Newport High School in 1933. He married Ardis Voy Carr on August 7,
1937, at the Methodist Parsonage by Reverend Robert Van Norman. [Sentence omitted]
He was inducted into the Army on August 12.
