In a letter written by Lottie Jane McCroskey Monroe dated April 6, 1982, she wrote about her father:
My father, John Robert, was a big man, fair complexion, sandy curly hair and big blue eyes. Even though he was "The Village Blcksmith," he was very gentle and kind. He loved to sing and was blessed with a deep, rich, bass voice. He taught Sunday School and was the Lay Preacher on the three Sundays before Circuit-Riding Preacher came on his regular fourth Sunday. Every evening, after supper, he would read the scriptures to us, then take his violin, I would go to the organ and we would sing a hymn or two before bedtime. He married Lydia Catherine Ellis, June 1876, and raised a large family."
