McCroskey Monday, Sept. 22, 2008 CONNEAUT — George W. McCroskey, age 90, of Conneaut, Ohio, died peacefully, Saturday afternoon, Sept. 20, 2008, at the Ashtabula County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a six-month illness. Born July 31, 1918, in Monroe Township, he was the son of George W. and Dessie M. (Bird) McCroskey, and he married Shirley Reger of Monroe in Follansbee, W.Va., in 1943. They celebrated their 65th anniversary on September 17, 2008. A Veteran, George served in the U.S. Army, 46th Tank Battalion and the European Theater during World War II. He was employed at Ashtabula Forge (formerly Ashtabula Bow Socket) for 34 1/2 years, retiring in 1981. He enjoyed part-time employment painting for many local residents and businesses. George was a 50-year active member of the East Conneaut United Methodist Church where he served as an usher, a trustee, and was a member of the Christian Family Class. He loved volunteering for Urban Missions, Steubenville, Ohio, and locally the L.E.A.F. Program and Habitat for Humanity. He was a member of the VFW and the Lake Erie Boat Club. George enjoyed fishing, reading, jigsaw and word search puzzles, watching sports, attending Army reunions, meeting friends at McDonald’s for coffee, and especially spending time with his family and friends. (SURVIVORS OMITTED) Preceding him in death were his parents, sisters, Genevieve Hirsch and Myrtle June Paxton; and his brother, Jack McCroskey. Funeral Services will be 1 p.m., Wednesday, September 24th, at the East Conneaut United Methodist Church with Pastor Paula Marbury officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memory Gardens, where American Legion Cowle Post #151 will perform military rites. Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, at the THOMPSON-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 345 Main St., Conneaut. The family respectfully requests that memorial donations be made to the L.E.A.F. Mission Project in care of the East Conneaut United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 632 Conneaut, Ohio 44030 or Hospice of the Western Reserve, 300 E. 185th St., Cleveland, Ohio 44119-1330.
