Margaret Lillian "Marnie" Porter's notes:
"Robert Toney, Sr. and his brother Poindexter Toney were the first settlers on the Big Coal River, then Virginia, now WV. When the land west of the Allegheny Mountains was opened for settlement, Congress gave large land grants to soldiers who wanted to settle there. Robert Toney received a land grant on Big Coal River extending from Joe's Creek along Big Coal River for five or six miles, including all of Toney's Branch. At the same time, his brother Poindexter Toney received a large land grant farther down the river, including Peytona.
Robert, Toney, Sr. and Poindexter Toney came to Big Coal River, staked their claim, planted a crop, then went back east for their families. When they returned they found that Indians had burned their cabins and bears had destroyed their crops.
Robert Toney, Sr. had a son Robert Toney, Jr. He was born on the new land and lived there all his life. He was active in politics and served in the Virginia Legislature which met in Williamsburg, VA. He rode horseback from Big Coal Creek to Williamsburg to attend.
Robert Toney, Sr. had a stroke and was paralyzed the last ten years of his life. After his death, his daughter Nancy and husband John Armstrong Porter moved into the home which now belonged to their son Andrew.
The family graveyard is in the corner of the garden near the house. When Andrew sold the home in 1911, he deeded the grave to the dead. I believe it is one half acre. The deed is on record in the courthouse in Madison, WV.
Information regarding the Toneys and the Porters was given to me by my grandparents, Nancy and John Armstrong Porter and my father Andrew Crocket Porter. Information regarding the children of Robert Toney, Jr. was given to me by his daughter Izora Toney Thomas who is now deceased." Signed: Margaret Lillian Porter on June 28, 1988

Note:
From the Boone County West Virginia History, 1990 Boone County Genealogical Society, Inc.
Moved to Cole [sic] River in 1810 around Racine, West Virginia.
POINDEXTER TONEY was born in 1763 son of William and Margaret (Sutherland) Toney of Franklin County, Virginia. He died about 1835 and is buried near Toneys Branch in Boone County. He may have served in the Revolutionary War because it is known that his twin brother, Carey, served. He may have been with other members of the Toney family when their ginseng camp on Toneys Branch was raided by Indians in the early 1790's. We know that his brother, John Toney, owned land there at that time. He married lst Mary Rawson of Franklin County, Virginia in 1788 and 2nd Jane Lilly, daughter of Robert, in 1797 in Montgomery County, Virginia. Some people have the theory that his lst wife and children may have been killed in the raid on the "Rooting Camp", but there doesn't seem to be a tradition in this area of such deaths.
Children of Poindexter and Jane were: Frances who m. Edley Elkins; Mary; James who m. Nancy Gillispie; Carey who m. lst a dau. of Nathan Turley, 2nd Telitha V. Bailey; Robert who m. lst Penedomonia Foster and 2nd Ellen Lavette, a schoolteacher; Margaret who m. lst John G. Jarrell, 2nd her cousin, William Toney; Harvey who m. Maria Fauber; Jane who m. Van Rensellar Curtis as his 2nd wife; Poindexter who m. lst Elizabeth Jarrett, 2nd Mary M. Gillespie; Adam who m. Julia Ann Abbott; Jesse who m. Amanda Jarrell; Nancy who m. John Smith; and Susan who m. Madison Jarrell.
